One $2.5 billion film transformed a quarter at Sony’s studio, which now has to show the gains can outlast a single web-slinger.
One movie did this. Sony’s Pictures division earned ¥92.6 billion in operating income in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up from ¥13.9 billion a year earlier, according to Zacks, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the engine.
The dollar figures tell the same story. TheWrap reported that studio revenue climbed 37% to $3.23 billion while theatrical revenue reached $1.28 billion, a gain of more than 1,100%. The film’s $2.52 billion run has made it Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing release ever and the third-biggest of all time before inflation, trailing only Avengers: Endgame and Avatar.
Even so, the studio remains a supporting player inside the company. Sony’s total operating income rose 45% to ¥622.3 billion on sales of about ¥3.43 trillion, and games (¥220.1 billion), image sensors (¥154.6 billion) and music (¥122.8 billion) each out-earned Pictures. Management still liked what it saw. The full-year operating income forecast went from ¥1.72 trillion to ¥1.87 trillion, with Zacks reporting the Pictures target raised by ¥50 billion to ¥200 billion.
Look past the superhero and the picture gets less tidy. Television production revenue fell to ¥76.7 billion from ¥103.4 billion, a reminder that a theatrical blowout can hide softness elsewhere for a quarter but can’t fix it.
The next test arrives quickly. Sony is handling Ramayana: Part 1 outside India, and it is projected to open to just $6 million to $10 million over four days from 1,300 locations, TheWrap reported, with a combined production and marketing budget of $420 million across both installments.
Spider-Man set the bar this year. The studio’s job is to clear ¥200 billion with everything else it has.
