Comcast’s spun-off cable group posted lower revenue and profit in the third quarter, and its digital gains were smaller than its linear losses.

Versant has a growth story and an arithmetic problem. The cable group Comcast spun off in January reported third-quarter revenue of $1.59 billion, down 4.2%, while operating income fell 32.9% to $110 million and net income dropped 40.5% to $47 million.

The good news sits in Platforms, the unit that holds Fandango and GolfNow. Revenue there rose 9.6% to $245 million, and The Desk reports growth of 17.4% once the SportsEngine divestiture and the Full Swing acquisition are stripped out. That added $21 million from a year earlier, according to Awful Announcing. Linear distribution revenue, meanwhile, fell from $992 million to $935 million, mainly on subscriber losses. Advertising slid 5.3% to $373 million against a comparison with last year’s Ryder Cup. Then came content licensing, down 23.6%.

Linear TV still accounts for about 85% of revenue, so the math is not close yet. CEO Mark Lazarus pointed instead to “audience growth and the completion of all planned pay television distribution renewals for the year.” That matters more than it sounds: Cynopsis reports the deals put 75% of network subscribers under contract going into 2028, which buys time. The company also reaffirmed full-year revenue guidance of $6.2 billion to $6.45 billion.

Sports is where Versant wants to spend that time. On the earnings call, Lazarus said “there will be opportunity” as other media companies trim their portfolios, though the NFL is “not likely,” Awful Announcing reported. The outlet’s own list of possible openings includes TNT Sports’ MLB and NHL packages and NBC’s Premier League deal, all of which run out in 2028. None of those is a company statement.

The next test is whether rights spending and Platforms growth can outrun the subscriber line. Cable fees still fund the pivot. Each cancellation makes it harder to pay for.
